Fairfield by Marriott Michi-no-Eki Project (Location: Oyodo-Naka, Kita-ku, Osaka; COO: Shigeru Oshima) will hold an event on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in collaboration with "Ikeda Gankodo," which produces "Nara Uchiwa," a traditional craft of Nara City, Nara Prefecture, to offer an experience of making Nara Uchiwa. This event will be held for guests who stayed at Fairfield by Marriott Nara Tenri Yamanobe no Michi the day before, with Mr. Masashi Ikeda, the sixth-generation head of Ikeda Gankodo, invited as an instructor.
The Fairfield by Marriott Michi-no-Eki Project operates 29 accommodation-focused hotels nationwide, advocating a travel style that explores "the unknown charms of local regions" based at its hotels. The project's concept is "Quest for the Unknown Japan," aiming to help guests discover unique local experiences and unknown attractions across the country.
Nara is an ancient capital with over 1,300 years of history, where numerous traditional crafts such as brushes, ink, Akahada ware, and Nara lacquerware are still preserved. As the third installment of events to experience Nara's traditional crafts, following Akahada ware and Nara brushes, this time the spotlight is on Nara Uchiwa.
Nara Uchiwa is a traditional craft originating from the handiwork of Shinto priests at Kasuga Taisha Shrine. With more than twice the number of ribs of a typical fan, it offers excellent practicality, providing a pleasant breeze with good flexibility, and delicate beauty created by openwork. Currently, Ikeda Gankodo is the only specialty store that manufactures and sells them. Its entirely handmade technique is a valuable cultural asset that conveys the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship today.
At this event, Mr. Masashi Ikeda, the sixth-generation head of Ikeda Gankodo, will be invited as an instructor to guide participants through the Nara Uchiwa making experience. During the experience, participants will choose their favorite combination from 4 colors and 10 patterns to create their own unique Nara Uchiwa. The experience of finishing a craft that combines delicate openwork design and practicality with self-chosen colors and patterns is a valuable opportunity to touch Nara's culture. A "collage" Uchiwa making experience is also available for children, so a wide range of ages can enjoy it. The completed Uchiwa will be taken back to Ikeda Gankodo after the experience for final finishing by artisans. Through this process, authentic Nara Uchiwa will be delivered to everyone.
Nara Uchiwa, when displayed in a room, delights the eye as a tasteful interior decoration, and when held, brings a refreshing breeze in the coming hot season, truly a masterpiece combining beauty and practicality. We hope to deliver an irreplaceable moment to everyone through this special experience unique to the ancient capital. Please take this opportunity to participate.
