Liquid Inc. announced the launch of a new “Manage Data Correction Option” for “LIQUID eKYC Manage,” the review management function of its online identity verification service “LIQUID eKYC.” The new feature allows operators to check and correct IC chip reading and OCR results directly on the review screen. It addresses cases where accurate text data could not previously be obtained due to document specifications or reading methods, such as non-standard characters on driver’s licenses, garbled text on My Number Cards, and OCR misrecognition on residence cards. According to Liquid, among around 300,000 driver’s license IC data records handled by LIQUID eKYC, approximately 10% of names and 6% of addresses contained non-standard characters and had to be routed to visual review. The feature automatically fills in IC or OCR results as initial values. Operators can then correct or supplement fields such as name, date of birth, address, residence period expiration date, and residence status. Supported documents include driver’s licenses, My Number Cards, residence cards, special permanent resident certificates, second-generation residence cards, and second-generation special permanent resident certificates. The option can also work with LIQUID eKYC’s AI review function. The AI automatically handles OCR, comparison between application data and document data, and expiration checks, completing applications without issues automatically. Only cases requiring correction, such as those involving non-standard characters or garbled text, are routed to operators, eliminating the need for full manual review. Businesses can configure the feature by switching correction target fields on or off in the Manage admin screen. Liquid said IC reading is increasingly used by financial institutions and other businesses because it provides higher data authenticity and lower forgery risk than image capture. However, as support expands across more document types, issues caused by document specifications have become more visible. For example, non-standard characters on driver’s licenses are stored as images rather than text in the IC chip; My Number Cards may occasionally display names or addresses as Korean characters or garbled text due to manufacturing specifications and conversion processes; and current residence cards store IC data as a single full-face image, making OCR necessary for text extraction. For financial institutions, demand for accurately identifying the residence period expiration dates of foreign residents has increased after the Japanese government decided in June 2024 to strengthen bank account management based on residence periods. With the new option, operators can immediately review and correct OCR results, improving the accuracy of residence-related data. Liquid also expects the feature to reduce user burden when filling in application forms. IC and OCR results can be automatically entered, and if the entered values differ from the document content, operators can review and correct them from the management screen, helping improve completion rates. “LIQUID eKYC” is an online identity verification service that has held the No. 1 share in Japan’s eKYC market for six consecutive years. It supports online contracts, account registration, and bank account opening through document capture or IC chip reading, selfie face matching, and public personal authentication using JPKI / smartphone JPKI. Across the ELEMENTS Group, cumulative identity verifications total approximately 150 million, with around 600 contracted companies.
