Editorial Engineering Laboratory (Headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Akiko Ando) has been commissioned by Nara City (Mayor: Gen Nakagawa) for information editing tasks aimed at the city's future, and has produced the booklet "NARA CODE," which systematically organizes the wisdom residing in Nara's history and culture.
This booklet re-edits Nara's history and culture in light of modern social challenges, using the methodology of "Editorial Engineering" that our company has cultivated. It presents the historical and cultural assets possessed by the region as "codes (patterns) of wisdom" for readers themselves to deepen their thinking, making it an attempt to decipher regional culture from a new perspective.

Production Background: Re-editing "Wisdom" against Global Confusion
Fluctuations in global order, rapid AI advancement, worsening environmental problems, and expanding inequality and division. Modern society is facing complex phases that cannot be grasped by a simple extension of the past. Under such circumstances, Editorial Engineering Laboratory has focused on the "editing of knowledge" to re-grasp the relationships between people and nature, and people and society through the methodology of "Editorial Engineering."
Nara is an "accumulation site of wisdom" that has accepted diverse cultures as the origin of Japanese culture and re-weaved them into its own unique forms. In this project, based on Nara City's philosophy of "Old History, New Discovery," we re-edited Nara's knowledge as a resource to envision the future while learning from the past. "NARA CODE" is an attempt to share "clues" for us living in the present age to gain new perspectives.
Editorial Engineering Approach:
"Editorial Engineering" is a methodology that does not simply accumulate information and knowledge but creates new meaning and value by relating and rearranging them. It is positioned as an "OS for thinking" to reread existing knowledge from different perspectives and utilize it in modern times. In this project, we applied this editorial engineering concept to unearth regional culture.
We reorganized Nara's history and culture, which had previously been treated as mere "knowledge," into "codes (patterns)" connected to contemporary questions. Through this, the city of Nara is transformed into a "library of thought for living in the modern age."
