EdgeCortix® Inc. (Headquarters: Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Founder and CEO: Sakyasingha Dasgupta, hereinafter "EdgeCortix"), a leading fabless semiconductor company specializing in energy-efficient artificial intelligence (AI) processing for the edge, today announced the completion of an edge AI platform demonstration in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force. The demonstration was conducted in an exercise simulating advanced multi-domain operational environments and AI-equipped mission systems. EdgeCortix also received a Success Memorandum from the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), confirming that all validation items set for the prototype project were executed and its technical validity was recognized.
In this demonstration, EdgeCortix's AI accelerator "SAKURA-II" platform proved its high-performance, low-power AI inference capabilities in a real-world operational environment, including on aircraft. It was demonstrated that the platform can support not only commercial AI applications but also custom AI applications for defense purposes.
Lieutenant Colonel Spencer Liedl, Director of Operational Test for the Air National Guard Air Force Reserve Command Test Center (AATC), stated:
"The U.S. Air Force and EdgeCortix jointly integrated SAKURA-II into a mission system for operational use and demonstrated the tactical utility of AI inference during flight, simulating actual operational scenarios in a large-scale air exercise."
Furthermore, as part of the DIU project, EdgeCortix conducted the following validations and tests:
AI Benchmark and Performance Verification AI performance evaluation was conducted with independent verification support from the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute (CMU SEI).
Radiation Tolerance Testing of SAKURA-II AI Accelerator Platform for Space and Lunar Exploration NASA's heavy-ion irradiation tests confirmed that no critical failures or significant anomalies occurred, and transient effects were extremely limited. This demonstrated high radiation tolerance for space environments from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to cis-lunar space, as well as for defense applications.
Integration and Flight Testing Flight tests were conducted using an "Advanced Intelligent Gateway System" prototype aimed at building a resilient multi-domain operational environment network among joint and allied forces.
This prototype system demonstrated the ability to efficiently execute advanced AI workloads at the tactical edge, even under harsh environmental conditions and real-world operational constraints. The radiation tolerance evaluation further built upon the results of EdgeCortix's previous environmental resistance assessments of SAKURA-II in orbital and lunar exploration environments conducted in collaboration with NASA.
Dr. Sakyasingha Dasgupta, Founder and CEO of EdgeCortix, commented:
"This achievement is a significant milestone demonstrating that the SAKURA-II platform can meet the stringent demands of the aerospace and defense sectors. Through AI benchmark and performance verification, radiation tolerance testing, aircraft integration, and flight demonstrations, we have shown that low-power edge AI platforms play a crucial role in enabling reliable autonomous operations and robust AI inference in next-generation defense and space systems."
The DIU Success Memorandum received this time serves as proof that EdgeCortix's developed commercial edge AI technology has been recognized for its effectiveness in environments simulating operational use in the defense sector. It is also positioned as a foundational achievement for future transition to operational deployment, mass production, and expansion into next-generation aerospace and defense systems. Furthermore, these flight tests have improved the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of EdgeCortix's platform for aircraft integration.
