DXYZ Pilots Facial Recognition ID Platform 'FreeiD' at 84th Waseda-Keio Basketball Match

This initiative targeted alumni (OB/OG) of the Keio University Athletic Association Basketball Team, enabling seamless access and on-site shopping through facial recognition entry ("FreeiD Reserve") and facial recognition payment ("FreeiD Pay"). Attendees could now enjoy the game more freely than ever, without carrying tickets or wallets—simply using their face for entry and purchases. This marks the first time FreeiD has been introduced in student sports.

* FreeiD users: Approximately 150 members of the Keio University Athletic Association Basketball Team alumni and their families.

* Entry gates were separated into general, student, Keio basketball alumni, and Waseda basketball alumni categories. Facial recognition entry via FreeiD was implemented exclusively at the Keio basketball alumni gate.

Background of FreeiD Deployment at the Waseda-Keio Basketball Match

The annual Waseda-Keio basketball match is a traditional rivalry between Waseda University and Keio University. While the event attracts large crowds each year, it has faced operational challenges such as congestion at ticket checks and cash handling during merchandise purchases, affecting both organizers and attendees.

To address these issues and create a more immersive spectator experience, DXYZ introduced the FreeiD facial recognition platform. This trial deployment focused on Keio University basketball alumni, offering both facial recognition entry and payment in a single, integrated service. This is the first time FreeiD has been applied to student sports.

Looking ahead, DXYZ plans to gradually expand the service to all attendees and explore deployment at other student sports events based on this year’s results.

By registering a facial photo in the FreeiD app in advance, users can enter in approximately 0.2 seconds by simply facing a flap gate (automated facial recognition gate). No ticket presentation or QR code scanning is required.
