The Denta Approach series is an oral care product line specializing in periodontal disease prevention, developed by Yoko Takeuchi, representative of Y&S Co., Ltd. After being diagnosed with severe periodontal disease following the shock of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, Takeuchi taught herself through repeated experiments while also running an udon restaurant, and launched the product in 2007. The koyamaki extract contained in the product was tested and verified together with Osaka Dental University, where it was proven to have bactericidal effects against periodontal disease bacteria and cavity-causing bacteria. The technology has been patented. Since its launch, Denta Approach has gained strong support mainly through word of mouth, and the series has now surpassed 1 million units in cumulative sales. Denta Approach was born from experiments that Takeuchi pursued as her only emotional support during a period of despair after the Great Hanshin Earthquake, when she was caring for her father-in-law with dementia while also suffering from severe periodontal disease herself. Since 1975, Takeuchi and her husband had operated an udon restaurant in Kobe. The business was stable, and in 1995 they expanded and built a new building. However, the Great Hanshin Earthquake struck the day after the building was completed. Although the building avoided total destruction or collapse, its exterior walls were scorched and the surrounding area was burned out. Takeuchi lost her mother-in-law in the disaster, her father-in-law developed dementia from the shock, and loan repayments began, leaving her at a loss about how to continue living. While caring for her father-in-law, Takeuchi saw his hair loss and wondered whether regrowing hair might help him regain vitality and improve his dementia. She began researching hair-growth products and tested extracts from more than 100 types of plants and flowers, but saw no results. Four years after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, her father-in-law passed away. Around that time, Takeuchi had been diagnosed with severe periodontal disease and was told at age 42 that she would need dentures. Unwilling to accept dentures, she began testing whether materials used in her hair-growth research might work for periodontal disease. Among them, she sensed that extract made from koyamaki was different. After applying the extract to her gums, she no longer needed to visit the dentist almost every week for painkillers, as she previously had, and two years passed without her realizing it. A dentist who later examined her mouth was surprised and recommended that she conduct experiments at a dental university. Following that advice, and with the cooperation of a dentist, Takeuchi commissioned Osaka Dental University to run tests. The results proved bactericidal effects against periodontal disease bacteria and cavity-causing bacteria, leading to a patent and the launch of Denta Approach in 2007.
