Delta Electronics (Japan), Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Kengo Hua; hereinafter "Delta Electronics") has reached an agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Seiji Izumisawa; hereinafter "MHI") to conduct a technical study aimed at advancing energy management at MHI's Mihara Works (Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture), which serves as a model factory for decarbonization.
This partnership is part of MHI's efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, aiming to optimize energy usage and improve operational efficiency at its manufacturing sites. Delta Electronics intends to provide energy data analysis and consulting, IoT connectivity, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and advanced energy management systems (EMS) utilizing AI and digital twin technology.
As the "Carbon Neutral Transition Hub Mihara" (hereinafter "CNTH Mihara"), the Mihara Works is a key facility supporting MHI's phased strategy for promoting low-carbon and decarbonization efforts. It plays a leading role in advancing energy management and improving energy efficiency at both domestic and overseas factories through the implementation of advanced solutions and technological development.
Based on this agreement, Delta Electronics will first conduct a preliminary survey phase (hereinafter "this phase"). During this phase, the company will evaluate the measurement infrastructure, data connectivity, communication environment, and data management system at CNTH Mihara. Additionally, Delta Electronics will conduct its "GX Co-Creation Energy Workshop" with MHI to identify potential energy-saving measures and define KPIs for measuring their effectiveness. The study will also explore system architecture utilizing IoT, with a view toward future energy data integration and advanced management.
Building on the results of this phase, the two companies plan to discuss subsequent steps, including the formulation of an implementation roadmap for advanced energy management and the development of IoT infrastructure.
Through this study, both companies aim to accumulate knowledge for optimizing energy use and operations at MHI's manufacturing sites and promoting Green Transformation (GX). In the future, they will also examine the feasibility of advanced energy management using AI and digital twin technologies. By doing so, they aim to establish a new energy optimization model applicable to the manufacturing industry as a whole.
Delta Electronics will leverage its long-cultivated power electronics technology and digital energy management solutions to contribute to improved energy efficiency and the promotion of decarbonization in the industrial sector. The company remains committed to supporting the manufacturing industry's GX initiatives to help realize a sustainable, carbon-neutral society.
[Details of the Preliminary Survey Phase]
1. Evaluation of On-site Readiness
The current status will be evaluated from the perspectives of measurement infrastructure, data connectivity, communication environment, and data management to assess the factory's data maturity and system connectivity. This will organize the fundamental information necessary for studying the measurement/communication infrastructure and control architecture required for future energy management advancements.
2. Implementation of GX Co-Creation Energy Workshops
Energy usage will be assessed through factory walkthroughs to identify potential energy-saving measures. Simultaneously, KPIs for measuring the effectiveness of these measures will be defined, and a framework to enhance the effectiveness of energy improvement activities will be established.
3. Design of Solution Architecture
The system architecture will be studied with an eye toward future IoT connectivity and energy data integration, providing a direction for building a foundation for advanced energy management utilizing AI and digital twins.
