Hakone Glass Forest Museum (940-48 Sengokuhara, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture) will hold a collection exhibition, "Cabinet of Curiosities in Venetian Glass: The Creation of the World," starting April 18, 2026.
■Collection Exhibition: Cabinet of Curiosities in Venetian Glass - The Creation of the World
In the late 15th century, Italian princes and nobles began to create exhibition rooms to house flora, fauna, minerals, and crafts from outside Europe, acquired through Eastern trade via Venice. Eventually, as these exhibition rooms became popular throughout Europe, particularly in Germany, they came to be known as "Cabinets of Curiosities," serving as the prototypes for modern museums and art galleries.
Stimulated by objects from unknown worlds, Venetian glassmakers developed new techniques, such as glass imitating gemstones and minerals, and glass mimicking Chinese white porcelain. The works created with various colors and patterns in this way captivated all of Europe and established the fame of Venetian glass. This exhibition will introduce a "Cabinet of Curiosities" that fascinated royalty, nobility, and literati with numerous techniques and craftsmanship born from the inquiring minds of glassmakers.
■Concurrent Exhibition: Takashi Tsuboya Photography Exhibition
The tradition of collecting, which began in Venice around the Renaissance period, shifted its focus from valuables to objects that stimulated more curiosity during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Among these were costumes from various countries, which also influenced the masquerade costumes of the Venice Carnival.
Even today, the Venice Carnival attracts many tourists from around the world, creating scenes reminiscent of the 18th century, when the culture reached its peak of maturity.
Photographer Takashi Tsuboya revives the appearance of Venice in the past through his photographic works. Through Takashi Tsuboya's photographs, we introduce the glamorous atmosphere of the carnival that was adored by the upper classes throughout Europe and influenced various arts such as poetry, painting, and theater.
