Discover Twenty-One Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and Executive Officer: Naomi Taniguchi) published "Let Go of Teaching: Coaching to Unleash the Autonomy of Individuals and Teams" (authored by Masaaki Koido) on April 24, 2026.
This book compiles the practical knowledge of human resource development and team building from Masaaki Koido, the director of the University of Tsukuba Soccer Club, who has produced a continuous stream of professional players and coaches, including Japan national team player Kaoru Mitoma, and led the team to its first double championship in 45 years in 2025.
■ Existing members grow into top-tier talent and achieve results. The secret lies in "not teaching."
Director Masaaki Koido experienced the club's relegation to the Kanto University Soccer League Division 2 for the first time after the war and then led them to become the best team in Japan.
His approach was not a management style of "teaching," "instructing," or "controlling," but rather coaching that draws out the autonomy of the members and the team.
■ Practical knowledge of coaching in one book
How did the director actually engage with and interact with the members?
How was a proactive and autonomous team created?
Why does "not teaching" coaching work?
This book compiles the practical knowledge gained so far, offering solutions to the concerns of all leaders and managers who lead teams, not just in sports coaching, such as:
"Why don't they move unless told?" "How many times do I have to tell them before they change?" "What should I do about the difference in motivation within the team?"
■ "Self-Management Sheet" to foster autonomy
This book introduces the "Self-Management Sheet" practiced by the University of Tsukuba Soccer Club, which encourages each member to clarify their goals and take action.
It includes examples of University of Tsukuba Soccer Club alumni, including Kaoru Mitoma, showing how they thought and acted, and can be applied to your own teams and organizations.
