Description of Each Award
Computational Social Science Society Academic Contribution Award: Newly established in 2026 to honor outstanding academic contributions in the field of computational social science among members or researchers based in Japan, to indicate the future direction of the field, and to serve as a goal for the next generation of researchers. The recipient is determined by a resolution of the board of directors following screening and recommendation by a selection committee set up annually.

In addition, the society honors excellent research at its annual conference through the following awards, based on voting by society members and steering committee members who attended the presentations, as well as selection by sponsors.

Outstanding Presentation Award: Awarded to particularly excellent presentations among all those presented. The awardees are all authors.
Akira Ishii Award (Student Award): Awarded to excellent presentations by students that missed selection for the Outstanding Presentation Award. The awardee is the first author (student).
Sponsor Award: Awarded based on selection by sponsors. The awardees are all authors.

1st (2026) Computational Social Science Society Academic Contribution Award
Fujio Toriumi (Professor, Department of Systems Innovation, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo)

Reason for Award: Professor Toriumi is a leading researcher who laid the foundation for computational social science in Japan and pioneered the field as an interdisciplinary research area by introducing information engineering methods to social science issues. He has enhanced his international reputation through prompt responses to social crises, such as real-time analysis of SNS data during the COVID-19 pandemic and fake news research. Furthermore, by advocating "Information Health," he has made pioneering proposals including the redesign of institutions and rethinking of economic structures for the sanitization of the information environment. He also led the "Werewolf AI" project, promoting the exploration of social capabilities like AI consensus building and ethical dialogue, thus developing original research bridging technology and society. Due to these academic contributions and international presence, Professor Toriumi has achieved outstanding results in both the development and social implementation of computational social science. Completed his Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2004 (Dr.Eng.). Served as Research Associate and Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Information Science, Nagoya University, and Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, before assuming his current position in 2021. Vice President of the Computational Social Science Society, Board Member of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Board Member of the Japan Society for Socio-Information Studies, and Editorial Board Member of the international journal Scientific Reports.

An award ceremony and a commemorative lecture were held at the 5th Computational Social Science Japan Conference.
