Challenging the Establishment of "Computer Clubhouse Nara (tentative name)" Where Technology Can Be Freely Explored

Our company endorses April Dream, which aims to make April 1st a day for announcing dreams. This press release is the dream of "Crossroad Co., Ltd."

Crossroad Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nara Prefecture) dreams of establishing "Computer Clubhouse Nara (tentative name)," a creative place where anyone, regardless of age, can experience the latest technology and give shape to their "creations."

■ Background: The Historic City of Nara Lacks a "Science and IT Creativity Hub"

Nara Prefecture boasts numerous wonderful facilities related to history, nature, and art. However, there are not yet enough places where people can freely use cutting-edge computer science and digital fabrication to engage in continuous projects.

We want to create a place in Nara where people can pursue creative exploration, not just "experience and finish," but shape their ideas over months or years. With the spirit of "If it doesn't exist, let's create it!", we conceived this project.

■ What is a Computer Clubhouse?

It is a third place for young people, born in Boston, USA, in 1993.

Its mission is to provide a "creative and safe learning environment." Young people from diverse backgrounds explore their own ideas using technology with mentors and acquire new skills. It is a place where they build "confidence" to believe in their own potential through activities. Its network has now spread worldwide.

■ Our "Three Dreams" to Realize

1. Creating Opportunities for Everyone to Be the Protagonist of Technology

Programming, manufacturing with 3D printers and laser cutters, professional video production, and music creation. We aim to create a place where anyone, regardless of age, can freely and for free (or at low cost) use expensive equipment and specialized environments.

2. Sharing Knowledge Across Generations (Realizing Community)

We will create a flat, multi-generational exchange space where young people teach adults the latest digital skills, and adults share rich experiences with young people. We will transmit a new "form of learning" from Nara that transcends the relationship of teaching and being taught.

3. From Nara to the World: Creating Collaborative Projects

Ideas born from this place will connect with friends around the world and grow into projects that move society. By becoming a member of a worldwide network, we will provide opportunities for young people in Nara to make friends around the world and broaden their horizons.

* Programming/IT: High-performance PCs, single-board microcomputers

* Digital Manufacturing: 3D printers, laser cutters

* Video Production: 4K cameras, shooting studio, chroma key set

* Music Production: Mixers, MIDI keyboards, soundproof booths

■ Message from the Representative

Through my activities with "CoderDojo," a global programming community, I have experienced the joy of making friends overseas and how it broadened my world. I want many young people in Nara to also experience connecting with the world through the common language of technology.

"Computer Clubhouse Nara (tentative name)" is currently in the "dream" stage with no concrete plans. However, we will start by brainstorming ideas at a casual level and gathering interested collaborators. We want to build a place where young people who will create the future gather, together with everyone, in the historic land of Nara.
