Craif Inc. (Location: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & CEO: Ryuichi Onose; hereinafter "Craif"), a bio-AI startup, announced that its public subsidy project for the urine cancer risk test "MySignal," implemented in Misato Town, Shimane Prefecture, has seen the town compile a supplementary budget to expand the target framework. This expansion is in response to "MySignal" becoming an opportunity to reach individuals who have had limited contact with existing specific health checkups and cancer screenings. The initial target of 100 people for public subsidies has been expanded to cover all 283 applicants. This project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of MySignal as a new entry point for health checkups and to promote its adoption by municipalities nationwide.

Project Outcomes

The introduction of public subsidies for MySignal has proven effective in promoting screening behavior among those who had not previously undergone specific health checkups or cancer screenings. Among the 283 applicants, an analysis of national health insurance subscribers (n=100) for whom detailed data was available revealed that approximately 8.3% (*1) of those who had not received specific health checkups for the past three years were motivated to apply and undergo screening through this project. Furthermore, applications were also received from individuals who had not undergone lung cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, or breast cancer screenings for the past three years. This demonstrates the effectiveness of reaching populations that are difficult to engage with through existing screening systems.

Background of the Initiative

In Japan, one in two people develop cancer, and the cancer screening rate remains low internationally at around 40%. Particularly in rural areas with limited access to medical facilities, the difficulty in accessing screenings further lowers the screening rate. In Misato Town, Shimane Prefecture, challenges in accessing medical institutions and the tendency to postpone screenings due to daily busyness persist, resulting in cancer screening rates below the target value (*2). Preventing severe illness and increased medical costs due to delayed detection is an urgent issue.

Craif is collaborating with Misato Town on this project with the aim of realizing a society where each resident can live a long and healthy life through early cancer detection and treatment. MySignal, which can be tested simply by collecting urine, is a convenient test for those who have difficulty accessing medical institutions or are busy with their daily lives to check their cancer risk. As a direct solution to these regional challenges, Craif is partnering with Misato Town to realize the nation's first municipal public subsidy for MySignal.

*2. Average rate for targeted screening is approximately 26% (Misato Town Cancer Screening Results, 2024).

Craif's Initiatives in Collaboration with Municipalities

Craif has been promoting the social implementation of MySignal through collaborations with municipalities and medical institutions. In 2024, a prospective observational study was conducted in Iwanai Town, Hokkaido, which led to the early detection and treatment of Stage 0 lung cancer triggered by MySignal. Subsequently, Craif has also collaborated with Rishiri Town, Hokkaido, to advance initiatives aimed at improving regional cancer screening rates, accumulating a track record of collaboration with municipalities.

The introduction of public funding in Misato Town is a new social model that promotes early cancer detection led by municipalities, built upon these achievements. Craif will continue to deepen its collaborations with municipalities and medical institutions to realize a society where as many people as possible can detect cancer early.

About "MySignal Scan"

"MySignal Scan" is a test that analyzes microRNAs in urine using AI to assess the risk of 10 types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer, from Stage 1 onwards, categorized by cancer type. It is a non-invasive test that can be performed simply by collecting urine.

"MySignal Scan" is not a medical device. It determines risk by statistically calculating analyzed information and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis to determine if one has cancer. Even if the risk is determined to be low, it does not guarantee the absence of cancer or that cancer will not develop in the future.

* Ovarian and breast cancer are tested for women only; prostate cancer is tested for men only.
