The original work is the manga of the same name by Akira Miyashita, which began serialization in Shueisha's "Weekly Shonen Jump" in 1985. It was adapted into an anime in 1988 and gained such popularity that a theatrical film was also produced. Since then, sequels and spin-off works have been developed, as well as stage adaptations and WEB anime distribution. The theme song by Isso Fubi Sepia, featuring Toshiro Yanagiba and Aikawa Show, also became a hit. This work has continued to captivate fans for 40 years.
The setting is "Otokojuku," where delinquent boys from all over the country gather. The story depicts their forging of friendship and true "manhood" through deadly battles and superhuman Spartan training. With its intensely unique characters, powerful confrontation scenes, and shocking lines, it leaves an unforgettable impact that captivated elementary, junior high, and high school boys at the time. Even after 40 years, it remains an 80s representative hard-boiled battle manga enthusiastically supported by many.
