Grand Sumo Summer Tour 2026: Misawa Basho to be Held on August 19

The 'Grand Sumo Misawa Basho' will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Misawa City International Exchange Sports Center. This regional tour offers various activities for everyone from sumo beginners to dedicated fans, allowing them to interact closely with rikishi (wrestlers). In addition to the matches, you must see the performances not found in regular tournaments, such as the 'Kami-yui (hair-fixing) demonstration,' where you can watch popular wrestlers' hair being styled into the 'Oicho' (ginkgo leaf) shape. There will also be plenty of laughter-filled scenes like 'Hatsukiri,' where forbidden moves and rare techniques are performed comically. Unique interactions such as handshake sessions with popular wrestlers and photo opportunities are also key attractions of the tour.
