On Thursday, April 30, Pia Corporation will release the “Sakigake!! Otokojuku COMPLETE DVD BOOK.”

We’ve kept you waiting! The latest installment in the highly anticipated “COMPLETE DVD BOOK” series—a collection that has sold over 1.15 million copies and offers nostalgic, popular anime from the Showa era at an affordable price—will feature the iconic 80s TV anime series “Sakigake!! Otokojuku.” The series will be released over four monthly volumes, containing all 34 episodes plus the theatrical film.

The original work is a hardcore battle manga by Akira Miyashita that began serialization in Shueisha’s “Weekly Shonen Jump” in 1985 and has now reached its 40th anniversary. It became so popular that it was adapted into a TV anime in 1988, during the end of the Showa era, and even spawned a theatrical film.

The story is set at “Otokojuku,” a school that gathers delinquent boys from all over the country. The narrative, which focuses on forging friendship and true “manhood” through life-or-death battles and superhuman Spartan education, was enthusiastically supported, particularly by elementary, junior high, and high school boys at the time.

The theme song by Issay Fubi Sepia, which included members like Toshiro Yanagiba and Sho Aikawa, was also a hit. Since then, the franchise has continued to captivate fans for 40 years through sequels, spin-offs, stage adaptations, and web anime distributions.

Each DVD contains approximately 4 hours of content (10 episodes), and the 16-page collectible booklet includes episode summaries and key highlights. Vol. 1 features a rare interview with voice actor Hideyuki Hori, who played the protagonist Momotaro Tsurugi. The book is packed with content that will make enthusiasts drool, including numerous previously unreleased character design sketches.

Furthermore, to commemorate the release, a bookstore campaign has been confirmed! Six bookstores in Tokyo and Osaka will offer a limited-edition original clear file as a gift. The front features a design overflowing with “manly spirit,” depicting the protagonist Momotaro Tsurugi and Headmaster Heihachi Edajima surrounded by other characters in a striking red color scheme. The back features the “Three Precepts of Otokojuku,” which every fan should memorize.

Please enjoy this masterpiece anime that everyone should watch at least once, along with the accompanying booklet that explains its charm.
