Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "JRC"), SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation (hereinafter "SKY Perfect JSAT"), and Sharp Corporation (hereinafter "Sharp") will collaborate to develop and demonstrate a next-generation communication system to advance the Ministry of Defense's project, "Development and Demonstration of Resilience Technology for Multi-Orbit (*1) Communication Systems," for which JRC was selected on February 4, 2026.

This project aims to improve the resilience (*2) and communication reliability of communication infrastructure, recognizing the growing demand for communication in disaster prevention and defense sectors, where stable connectivity is required under various circumstances, including natural disasters and unforeseen contingencies. The project seeks to build a next-generation communication system that combines the use of GEO, MEO, and LEO (*3) satellites. By establishing control technology that enables seamless switching between satellite communications—which currently rely on individual systems tailored to each specific orbit—the project will enable multi-orbit capability.

During the implementation period ending March 31, 2028, JRC will oversee the overall project, SKY Perfect JSAT will focus on building a seamless communication network, and Sharp will primarily lead the development of multi-orbit compatible satellite communication user terminals (*4). Together, they will develop a communication system compatible with GEO, MEO, and LEO multi-orbit satellites and verify the improvement of communication network resilience.

Through this demonstration, the three companies aim to improve communication reliability in various situations, including during disasters and emergencies, thereby contributing to the maintenance of social functions and the assurance of safety and security.
