KOSE Corporation (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Shinji Tanaka) has developed the "Nano Concealer Sheet" to eliminate deep skin concerns such as spots and bruises through joint development with Panasonic Industry Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Masato Ozawa). This technology responds to the desire to "naturally cover concerning spots and bruises"—a request that conventional cosmetics could not fully satisfy—using a concealer sheet laminated at the nanometer level.

Background of the Research

Spots and bruises are serious concerns that significantly impact the Quality of Life (QOL) of those affected. To understand the reality of these concerns, our company conducted a large-scale internet survey targeting Japanese men and women aged 15 to 69. The results confirmed that approximately 40% of people have some form of concern regarding spots or bruises, and about 70% of them showed a strong intention to "cover their skin concerns."

Responses to the questionnaire revealed that having skin concerns leads to feelings such as "lack of self-confidence," "feeling depressed," and "worrying about the eyes of others," illustrating the current reality where skin symptoms become a psychological burden and a barrier to social participation. This survey highlighted that spots and bruises are universally existing skin concerns, and they pose a serious "social and psychological challenge." Furthermore, since "no effective countermeasures exist" ranked high among the responses, it was evident that this is not a problem easily solved just by using commercially available cosmetics.

Development of the Nano Concealer Sheet for Natural High Coverage

While concealer and sheet-type items exist to address spots and bruises, there has been a trade-off: increasing coverage for deep skin concerns leads to an unnatural, thickly-applied finish, while seeking a natural look results in insufficient coverage. Therefore, we aimed to resolve this trade-off and achieve a "natural high cover" not through conventional cosmetics, but through our unique "Nano Concealer Sheet" approach. Normally, the film thickness of cosmetics like concealers or sheet-type products is more than 1/1,000th of a millimeter; while this provides coverage, it causes the thickly-applied and unnatural look. To address this, we incorporated technology from Panasonic Industry Co., Ltd., which applies special printing to an ultra-thin nano-sheet (about 1/1,000,000th of a millimeter), and equipped it with our proprietary Concealer Veil Theory.

Incorporating Proprietary Concealer Veil Theory for Natural Skin Blending

Our proprietary Concealer Veil Theory consists of two theories derived from the analysis results of various spots and bruises. The first is the Gradation Blend Theory. By gradually blending the contrast difference between the edges of the spots or bruises and the surrounding skin color using a gentle gradation, natural coverage can be achieved. The second is the Skin Mimicry Theory. When analyzing skin color from a microscopic perspective, we found it has extremely subtle color unevenness. By intentionally reproducing this unevenness, we minimized the characteristic "pasted-on feeling" of sheets to the absolute limit, achieving a natural finish.

In this way, by laminating coverage components at a high density on a nano-order ultra-thin sheet, and further incorporating a precise design derived from our unique Concealer Veil Theory—which is difficult to reproduce with conventional cosmetics—we achieved a "natural high cover" that blends naturally into the skin while providing high coverage, successfully resolving the trade-off. In monitor tests using prototypes, we received positive feedback not only on quality aspects like "naturally covered the spots," "made vitiligo inconspicuous," and "fits perfectly and blends with the skin," but also on psychological effects such as "no longer bothered by the symptoms" and "feeling a sense of security and peace of mind by wearing it."

Future Outlook

Through this research, we once again listened to the voices of those with deep concerns like spots and bruises—for which solutions were previously insufficient—and elucidated the reality. The results showed that the provision of solutions attuned to these concerns is highly anticipated. We will continue our research activities to solve social and customer challenges, aiming for a world where every customer can live a spiritually rich life true to themselves.
