A MESSAGE from Yutaka Sado

In 1987, the apartment in Fukushima where I lived for just one year before studying abroad in Vienna was chosen because it was close to The Symphony Hall (laughs). As an audience member, I dearly loved Japan's first dedicated classical music hall, and I am still very proud to be able to stand on this stage today!
Of course, living nearby didn't mean I had work at my dream hall, but after winning a competition, I started getting opportunities to stand on the podium in the 1990s. The "Ninth Symphony of the 21st Century" series, which I conducted every December from 1993 to 2010, became a series that remains in the hall's history, with the final year's five-day performance selling out. I remember the excitement, with the line of customers waiting for the post-performance autograph session wrapping around the entire building from the stage door. Besides this, being able to perform with not only the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra and the Osaka Philharmonic but also with overseas orchestras in this wonderful acoustic is a great treasure of mine.
I believe it was at the end of 1982 that our own Maestro Seiji Ozawa and the New Japan Philharmonic performed the "Ninth" as part of this hall's opening series. Over 40 years have passed, and I am truly happy and excited to be able to stand on the stage of this memorable Symphony Hall with the New Japan Philharmonic as its music director. - Yutaka Sado
