Finnish Defense Firm and AI Startup Partner to Build European AI Drone System

Finnish defense technology company Patria and AI startup Nest AI have announced a partnership to jointly build an AI-controlled drone system for European defense forces. Patria will be responsible for mass production, while Nest AI will provide software, AI algorithms, and command and control system integration. According to the Helsingin Sanomat, Patria, founded over a century ago, is a leading European defense equipment manufacturer and acquired Nordic drone company Nordic Drones in 2024. Nest AI focuses on developing battlefield AI technology, and the alliance aims to create a plug-and-play system for European militaries. Patria CEO Panu Routila stated that the company must lead in the field of unmanned systems. Nest AI founder and chairman Peter Sarlin is well-known in the Taiwanese semiconductor industry. He founded Silo AI in 2017, which was sold to AMD for $665 million in 2024. Nest AI aims to fill the gap for a European version of US defense AI companies like Palantir. The core product is an AI-driven battlefield command and control system that can directly interface with existing systems without changing the original architecture. Integrated with drones, it uses machine vision to navigate autonomously without relying on radio signals, making it resistant to enemy electronic jamming.
