Nuclear Safety Commission: Drone Attacks Included in Nuclear Security Plan, Defense Drills Conducted

Following a drone attack on a nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates on the 17th that caused a fire, the Legislative Yuan's Education and Culture Committee raised concerns about whether Taiwan has relevant security and anti-terrorism drills. The Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) announced today that it has incorporated relevant response measures into its nuclear security plan and is conducting drills related to defensive actions. Lin Chen-hsuan, head of the NSC's Security and Response Division, stated that each nuclear power plant conducts security and anti-terrorism drills annually, and drone-related responses have already been incorporated. The nuclear security plan includes an inventory of potential situations, risks, and response measures. Regarding the evacuation of residents in the event of a nuclear accident, Lin stated that in addition to emergency response plans within the plants, the NSC cooperates with local governments to conduct drills for emergency response plans. Evacuation sites are set within the emergency planning zones of New Taipei City and Keelung City; for example, New Taipei City usually designates areas more than 16 kilometers away from the nuclear power plant. Additionally, KMT legislator Ko Ju-chun inquired about the progress of the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant (Nuclear Three) restart plan, and Kao Pin, head of the NSC's Control Division, reported that Taipower submitted its first response explanation last Friday.
