Israeli Airstrike Destroys Civil Defense Facility in Southern Lebanon

The Lebanese Civil Defense Directorate announced early this morning that its regional facility in the southern city of Nabatieh had been destroyed following an Israeli attack. AFP reported that the Directorate General of Civil Defence stated that "malicious attacks launched by Israel" directly damaged their building in Nabatieh, causing the structure to collapse and damaging numerous vehicles and equipment. The Directorate further stated that there are currently no reports of casualties, as personnel had been relocated elsewhere in advance. In addition to condemning "this malicious attack on a humanitarian aid center," the Directorate stated that they are facing "increasingly severe risks and challenges" in carrying out their duties. Israel and the U.S. launched airstrikes against Iran in late February, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. To support Iran, the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel on March 2, drawing Lebanon into the Middle East conflict. To date, 123 rescue and medical personnel have lost their lives in Israeli attacks within Lebanon. Despite a ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and the Lebanese government on April 17, Israeli attacks have not ceased, with continued airstrikes against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah within Lebanon.
