The CEO of US semiconductor equipment supplier Lam Research stated today that the company is committed to adding sensor and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to its semiconductor manufacturing equipment to improve production efficiency, while also planning to expand investments in Arizona and California. According to Reuters, Lam Research supplies equipment to chipmakers such as Micron Technology and TSMC. With the surge in demand for AI chips driving customers to purchase more machines, Lam Research's stock price has risen more than 75% this year. CEO Tim Archer said the company's strategic focus for the next two years is to add more sensors to its equipment to generate data, allowing AI systems to analyze and detect problems early, helping customers improve wafer yields. Archer made these remarks at a venture competition held at the company's headquarters in Fremont, California. Lam Research provided a $250,000 investment to the startup Lightfinder. Lightfinder, a spin-off from MIT, successfully reduced the size and cost of a key chip inspection tool, allowing it to be integrated into existing machines without adding extra steps to the manufacturing process. Archer noted, "The more data collected from machines or wafers, the more accurately the system status model can predict and react to system issues." He also confirmed that Lam Research plans to build a new facility in the Phoenix area to support clients like TSMC, while also planning further investment in its California headquarters, where production operations continue. The Phoenix Business Journal reported last December that Lam Research spent over $45 million to purchase a building of approximately 13,750 square meters near TSMC's Phoenix plant. Archer said, "Clearly, from a customer support perspective, Arizona is a place we need to be. I also think you will see more investment from us in the Fremont area soon."
