(CNA reporter Yang Yao-ju, Taipei, 21st) The European Parliament has passed a resolution supporting Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations, expressing concern over the situation in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, and opposing any unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait by force or coercion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today that it thanks the European Parliament for continuously speaking out for Taiwan's international participation, and that Minister Lin Chia-lung affirms this action. On the 20th, the European Parliament passed the "Recommendation on the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly." It cited the 2024 resolution on "the PRC's misinterpretation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and its continued military provocations against Taiwan," emphasizing that UNGA Resolution 2758 did not decide Taiwan's sovereignty, nor did it mention Taiwan, and thus cannot be used to exclude Taiwan from international participation. The EU should strengthen its support for Taiwan's meaningful international participation to contribute to the well-being of the international community. The resolution stresses that conflict escalation in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea should be avoided through diplomatic means and opposes any act of unilaterally changing the status quo through coercion or force. It also calls for deepening cooperation with like-minded partners to consolidate stability and security in the Taiwan Strait region, strengthen deterrence against coercion or military action, and continue to defend the UN Charter's principle prohibiting the use of force. It also urges the United Nations to allow activists, civil society representatives, and journalists holding Taiwanese passports to enter the UN to participate in activities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release in the afternoon, stating that the resolution is a recommendation from the European Parliament to the Council of the EU, the European Commission, and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Lin Chia-lung expressed his sincere welcome and affirmation for the European Parliament's continued concrete actions to support Taiwan's international participation and maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked the European Parliament for continuing to speak out for Taiwan's international participation. Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with the EU and like-minded partners to jointly safeguard the rules-based international order, democratic freedom, and human rights values, and will actively contribute to the international community to make greater efforts for peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and globally.
