(CNA, Taipei, May 20, by reporter Hsu Chih-wei) National Chengchi University (NCCU) held its 99th-anniversary ceremony today, honoring seven outstanding alumni, including musician Wu Tsing-fong, poet Hsiang Yang (Lin Chi-yang), and Rock Records founder Duan Chung-yi. The university is also actively preparing a series of events for its upcoming centennial celebration next year.
In a press release today, NCCU stated that the theme of the 99th-anniversary celebration is "NCCU's Hidden Brilliance, Shining through 99 Years," symbolizing how its members have cultivated humanistic depth over time and continue to shine amidst changing eras. During the ceremony, the Outstanding Alumni Awards for the 114th academic year were presented to seven alumni from diverse fields such as cultural creation, diplomacy, business, and public service.
NCCU President Li Tsai-yen stated in his speech that amidst the rapid changes in the international situation and AI technology, NCCU has always believed that the humanistic spirit, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary innovation are the most crucial strengths for facing the future. He said that by staying true to one's original intentions and continuously moving forward, one can overcome the challenges of the times. With the centennial approaching next year, the university is preparing a series of events, hoping to unite the power of NCCU members worldwide to welcome the next century.
The recipients of this year's Outstanding Alumni Award include musician Wu Tsing-fong, Rock Records founder Duan Chung-yi, poet Hsiang Yang (Lin Chi-yang), public interest advertiser Wang Nien-tzu, entrepreneur Cheng Chin-ming, the late former President Lee Teng-hui's speechwriter Li Ching-yi, and former Control Yuan member Ma Hsiu-ju, who has been deeply involved in the audit and accounting fields.
Multiple Golden Melody Award-winning musician Wu Tsing-fong was unable to attend due to work commitments; his award was accepted by Sodagreen bandmate Hsieh Shin-yi and his manager. Wu's journey began at NCCU's Jin-Xuan Awards, and he, along with Sodagreen, rose to the pinnacle of the Mandopop scene. His delicate and literary compositions, including the work "Millennium Latecomer" which was selected for a junior high school Chinese textbook, have made him one of the few creators to bridge popular culture and the educational sphere.
Hsiang Yang (Lin Chi-yang), active in the literary world under his pen name, mentioned in his speech that he quit his newspaper job at 39 to return to NCCU for his doctorate. Burdened by a mortgage and family pressure, it was like starting his life's second chapter as an apprentice again, which was extremely arduous. He humorously noted that he turned his doctoral studies into a "nine-year compulsory education" but gained new life-giving nourishment from it, making the Outstanding Alumnus honor more precious than his doctoral certificate.
Duan Chung-yi, founder of Rock Records International Music, co-founded the label with his younger brother, creating the most important golden era of Mandopop. He has cultivated cross-generational musicians such as Lo Ta-yu, Jonathan Lee, and Mayday, influencing the development of Taiwan's popular culture.
