US Republican Senator: CCP is a Century-Long Threat, Military Support for Taiwan Should Not Be Frozen

While U.S. President Donald Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S.-China relations at a summit last week, Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz recently stated that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is a century-long threat to the United States and military support for Taiwan should not be frozen to please the Chinese government. The Houston Chronicle reported that Ted Cruz was campaigning for Republican candidate for Texas Attorney General, Chip Roy, in Cypress, Texas yesterday. Cruz pointed out, "I've said from the first day I was elected to the Senate that the number one geopolitical threat facing the United States over the next 100 years is the Chinese Communist Party." Cruz, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, praised Trump as a strong commander-in-chief willing to negotiate with anyone, but he believes the U.S. should not freeze military support for Taiwan to please the Chinese government. Trump recently discussed a $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan, stating, "Frankly, it's a great bargaining chip for us. That's a lot of weapons." However, Cruz believes that arms sales to Taiwan should not be part of any negotiation with China. He said, "I think we should stand firmly with Taiwan. Bullies and tyrants do not respect weakness."
