(CNA, Taipei, May 19, by Lai Yu-chen, Kao Hua-chien) Premier Cho Jung-tai stated today that the Republic of China being a sovereign and independent nation is a fact and the status quo, which will not change and cannot be changed. Taiwan's goal is to achieve win-win cooperation with the world, and it also hopes for peaceful co-prosperity across the Taiwan Strait. Apart from the non-negotiable principle that its sovereignty cannot be usurped, he expressed hope that both sides of the strait can re-engage in healthy and sustainable exchanges and dialogues based on equality and dignity.

Tomorrow, May 20th, marks the second anniversary of President Lai Ching-te's administration. Premier Cho Jung-tai, Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun, and Secretary-General Chang Tun-han attended an Executive Yuan press conference this morning to report on recent achievements, future prospects such as enhancing policies for a low birthrate, and to answer media questions.

The media asked if the government's cross-strait policy would become more flexible, noting former U.S. President Trump's comment after the Trump-Xi meeting that he didn't want anyone moving toward independence. Premier Cho stated that the government has noted Trump's remarks, as well as various comments from others like U.S. Secretary of State Rubio (Editor's note: Marco Rubio is a U.S. Senator).

He emphasized that the Republic of China being a sovereign and independent nation is a fact and the status quo, which will not and cannot be changed. He pointed out that the People's Republic of China's continuous military exercises of varying scales in the Taiwan Strait, Indo-Pacific, South China Sea, and even around Japan are the root cause of threats to navigational safety and regional instability.

Cho said that the government still hopes for healthy and orderly exchanges and a dialogue based on equality and dignity between the two sides, which is a consistent principle. Any negotiations, including whether the other side wants to resume cross-strait tourism, should be conducted through official channels and formal talks. Taiwan is ready to discuss tourism quality, content, and personal safety, but the other side has consistently avoided this channel.

He expressed his hope for peaceful coexistence among domestic political parties and peaceful co-prosperity across the strait, because Taiwan's goal is to achieve win-win cooperation with the world. Therefore, apart from the principle that sovereignty cannot be undermined or usurped, both sides can respond with sincerity and a positive attitude. He hopes both sides have the sincerity to re-engage in future healthy and sustainable exchanges and a dialogue based on equality and dignity. (Editor: Tsai Su-jung)
