Chiayi Man Detained for Allegedly Slashing Mother's Neck in Dispute Over Soup

A man surnamed Lin in Chiayi County allegedly got into a dispute with his mother over how to cook soup on the 15th, cursed at her, and then allegedly slashed her neck with a kitchen knife. Fortunately, the wound was not fatal. Police transferred him on suspicion of attempted murder of a direct blood ascendant, and the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office's request for detention was approved by the Chiayi District Court. The Chiayi District Court stated today that after questioning, Lin denied any intent to kill, but evidence suggests he is highly suspected of the crime of attempted murder of a direct blood ascendant. Although Lin admitted to attacking his mother, his account of how he obtained the kitchen knife differs significantly from his mother's. The court said that Lin and the victim are mother and son, and the penalties for attempted murder and assault differ greatly. There is considerable reason to believe that Lin might collude with the victim to reduce his sentence and downplay the severity of the crime. The court stated that Lin has a history of multiple domestic violence incidents against his mother, and there is factual basis to believe he is at risk of repeatedly committing domestic violence offenses. This time, Lin's act of attacking his mother with a kitchen knife after drinking has seriously endangered social order and the victim's life and physical safety. Therefore, his detention was ordered on the 16th. According to prosecutors and police, the 48-year-old Lin wanted to cook a seafood soup with an electric pot at noon on the 15th. However, his mother told him that electricity is expensive now and criticized him for not working and earning money, yet not knowing how to save electricity. Enraged, Lin yelled at his mother, cursed at her, and finally swung a kitchen knife at her once, slashing her left neck. Fortunately, it was not fatal. According to prosecutors and police, Lin claimed that during the argument, his mother first brandished the knife as if to discipline him, which is why he snatched it and swung it at her. Additionally, the mother also had a blade wound on her arm, which Lin denies inflicting, suggesting it may have been caused during the struggle.
