(CNA, Taoyuan Airport, May 18, reporter Wu Jui-chi) Taoyuan Airport Corp. announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Environment's Resource Circulation Administration on "Promoting Plastic Resource Circulation." The agreement focuses on three main strategies—source reduction, enhanced recycling, and reuse—to introduce concepts of plastic reduction and resource circulation into the airport. In a press release today, Taoyuan International Airport Corp. stated that on the 15th, under the joint witness of Ministry of Transportation and Communications Chief Secretary Shen Hui-hung and Ministry of Environment Deputy Minister Shen Chih-hsiu, Airport Corp. General Manager Fan Hsiao-lun and Resource Circulation Administration Director-General Lai Ying-ying signed the MOU on behalf of their respective organizations. The goal is to integrate the concepts of plastic reduction and resource circulation into the airport's daily operations, progressively deepen sustainability governance, and concretely implement sustainable development goals. In her address, Shen Hui-hung pointed out that as the nation's main gateway, Taoyuan Airport has continuously promoted measures such as carbon emission management, energy efficiency, and resource circulation in recent years, with the results of its sustainability governance gradually becoming apparent. This initiative to promote plastic resource circulation will introduce the concepts of source reduction, resource recycling, and sustainable management into airport operations and passenger services, working with the greater airport alliance to practice net-zero goals and leverage the airport's role as a model for the nation. Shen Chih-hsiu said that the Ministry of Environment continues to promote plastic reduction policies and develop diverse circulation models based on the characteristics of different venues. The signing of this MOU with the Airport Corp. symbolizes an important milestone in cross-ministerial efforts to promote low-carbon transition and resource circulation at the national gateway. In the future, it will build upon Taoyuan Airport's existing Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 4 certification to further deepen efforts in plastic reduction and circular use. Airport Corp. General Manager Fan Hsiao-lun noted that Taoyuan Airport recently received the gold award in the over 40 million annual passengers category of the ACI's 2026 Green Airports Recognition and obtained ACA Level 4 certification last year, making it the first airport in the country to receive this certification. This symbolizes that Taoyuan Airport is gradually moving from "reducing its own carbon emissions" to "leading the entire ecosystem in comprehensive carbon reduction." The Airport Corp. said that after multiple exchanges with the Resource Circulation Administration, a consensus was reached on cooperation in the areas of plastic "source reduction," "enhanced recycling," and "reuse." Related measures will be successively promoted and gradually expanded to more operational aspects and service links, working with airport alliance partners to promote plastic reduction and resource circulation actions, create a replicable and scalable practical model, and, combined with the concepts of low-carbon operations and sustainable governance, steadily advance towards the goal of becoming an international sustainable benchmark airport.
