TAICHUNG (CNA) — A member of the public who purchased a Japan tour package from Wei Shun Travel Agency received a notice of the agency's suspension just before their departure. The Tourism Administration confirmed that due to financial issues, Wei Shun Travel Agency has been ordered to suspend operations for three months starting from May 14. Travelers can receive refunds or be transferred to other tours according to their contracts.

A person had purchased a 5-day Fukuoka, Japan tour from Wei Shun Travel Agency in March this year for four people, costing NT$75,000. Originally scheduled to depart on May 26, they received a notice on May 15 that the travel agency had suspended operations and they would need to pay an additional NT$35,000 to proceed with the tour. They tried calling the agency's headquarters in Taichung but received no response. After posting their experience online, they discovered many others were in the same situation.

The Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, stated in a written release that Wei Shun Travel Agency proactively reported to the Travel Quality Assurance Association of R.O.C. on May 12 that it was unable to fulfill its contractual obligations to travelers due to financial problems. On May 13, the Tourism Administration, along with the TQAA, conducted a business inspection at Wei Shun Travel Agency.

The inspection revealed financial and operational irregularities. To prevent further damage to travelers' rights, the Tourism Administration, in accordance with the Act for the Development of Tourism, ordered Wei Shun Travel Agency to suspend its travel business operations for three months, effective May 14.

The Tourism Administration mentioned that for travelers scheduled to depart on or after May 14, they may request a full refund of travel fees and compensation for breach of contract from the agency, or be transferred by Wei Shun to another travel agency for their tour.

The Tourism Administration has requested the TQAA to assist in handling traveler complaints. TQAA spokesperson Lee Chi-yueh stated that people can prepare their performance contract and proof of payment (receipt) and contact the TQAA to arrange for coordination.

Lee Chi-yueh urged the public to purchase products from legally-operating travel agencies, remember to obtain receipts for payments made and sign standardized contracts, and to use credit cards or bank transfers for payment as much as possible, which provides a basis for coordination if problems arise later.
