US Congressional Support for Taiwan Reaffirmed Post-Trump-Xi Meeting, Highlighting Bilateral Importance

Los Angeles, Nov. 16 (CNA) - During a Taiwanese Heritage Week event in Los Angeles, U.S. Representative Judy Chu stated that with the world closely watching the Taiwan Strait, it is more necessary than ever for the United States to affirm its crucial commitment to Taiwan. Following the globally watched meeting between U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chu's remarks underscored the heightened importance of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship. She lauded Taiwan as a good friend to the U.S., its fourth-largest trading partner, and a vibrant democracy whose resilience and innovation inspire the world. Chu also mentioned her recent bipartisan letter to WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, expressing concern over Taiwan's forced absence from the 14th Ministerial Conference due to its denigrated designation by the host nation, Cameroon, stating, 'It is wrong for Taiwan to be excluded.' Echoing this sentiment, Yorba Linda Vice Mayor Peggy Huang emphasized that Pacific security hinges on the relationships between China, the U.S., Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, and that Taiwan's democratic will must be respected. The FAPA Los Angeles chapter also noted that long-term congressional support for Taiwan, cultivated over decades, remains strong regardless of administrative changes.
