Bulgaria Dramatically Overtakes Israel to Win Eurovision Song Contest

Bulgarian singer Dara has won the 70th Eurovision Song Contest with her dance track "Bangaranga." Despite the Israeli contestant receiving high scores in the public vote, Dara ultimately staged a dramatic comeback, securing Bulgaria's first-ever victory at the event. According to AFP and Reuters, Dara, a 27-year-old singer who was not a frontrunner a week before the contest, quickly gained popularity with her stunning semi-final performance and dynamic choreography, despite Bulgaria being absent from the last three contests. Dara, whose real name is Darina Yotova, explained today that her song "Bangaranga" represents "a feeling that everyone has in their heart," a "moment of choosing to lead with love instead of fear, a special energy that I believe everyone has." She said, "When a person is one with nature and the universe, they feel that harmony and can achieve whatever their heart desires; anything is possible." The Eurovision Song Contest, known for its glamour and lightheartedness, was mired in crisis this year due to Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland, and Slovenia boycotted Israel's participation over the Gaza war, marking the largest political boycott in Eurovision history. As a result, only 35 acts competed in this year's event in Vienna, Austria, the lowest number since 2003. Although Israeli contestant Noam Bettan initially seemed poised for victory with high scores from public telephone votes across Europe, Bulgaria ultimately won with 516 points, defeating Israel's 343 points. Romania placed third with 296 points. The controversy surrounding this year's contest stems from the Gaza war, which began after the Palestinian armed group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,200 people. Israel's subsequent military operation against Hamas-controlled Gaza has so far killed over 72,000 Palestinians and left much of the territory in ruins. Last year, the Eurovision Song Contest was watched by approximately 166 million people worldwide, an audience larger than the NFL's Super Bowl, which had 128 million viewers. The overall viewership for this year's event is expected to decline due to the boycotts by several countries.
