30th Anniversary of National Music Pioneer Peng Xiuwen's Passing: Memorial Concert to Be Held at Weiwuying

Central News Agency Reporter Chao Ching-yu, Taipei, May 16 - The late conductor Peng Xiuwen dedicated his life to the development of modern Chinese orchestras and was hailed as the "Father of Modern Chinese Orchestra." This year marks the 30th anniversary of his passing. The National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan and the Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra will jointly hold a memorial concert, inviting Yan Huichang, Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, to conduct in Taiwan.

According to news released by Weiwuying, Peng Xiuwen established the orchestration for Chinese orchestral symphonization in the 1950s, laying the foundation for modern large-scale Chinese orchestras. He also devoted much effort to improving musical instruments, leaving behind over a thousand rearranged and original works, elevating Chinese traditional music from folk music to a symphonic art form.

Peng Xiuwen's works possess profound Eastern cultural roots and a grand narrative scope, continuing to influence many Chinese orchestra conductors and musicians to this day. During his lifetime, Peng Xiuwen also visited Taiwan multiple times to perform his arranged and composed works, receiving immense resonance from music lovers.

The "Master of an Era—Peng Xiuwen Memorial Concert" will be conducted by Yan Huichang, the current Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He has repeatedly mentioned that Peng Xiuwen's ultimate pursuit of timbre and his strict adherence to scores remain guiding principles for his conducting. This time, he will lead the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan and Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra, along with other outstanding Chinese orchestra musicians, to interpret the authentic "Peng style."

The concert will be held on May 29 at the Weiwuying Concert Hall. The program includes pieces composed or rearranged by Peng Xiuwen for Chinese orchestras, such as the ancient tune "General's Command," "Friendship Wind No. 2: Treasure Island," "Bumper Harvest," the symphonic poem "Flowing Stream Movement," Hua Yan-jun's "Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Erquan)" and "Bumper Harvest Drums," as well as Peng Xiuwen's fantasia "Qin.
