Opposition Leader Elected New Prime Minister of Solomon Islands; Wale Previously Criticized China Pact

The parliament of the Solomon Islands elected opposition leader Matthew Wale as the new Prime Minister today, following the ousting of former PM Jeremiah Manele in a no-confidence vote last week. Wale defeated his rival Peter Shanel Agovaka by 26 votes to 22. Upon his election, Wale acknowledged taking office during turbulent times and noted the inevitable impact of geopolitical events. Although he strongly criticized the 2022 security pact with China, he has recently sought to improve relations, visiting Beijing in 2025 and expressing support for the 'One China' principle. Australian PM Anthony Albanese congratulated Wale, looking forward to strengthening partnerships.
