(CNA, Taipei, 15th, Reporter Tseng Yi-ning) DPP legislator Chen Ting-fei served freshly cooked Tainan oysters to Lin Chun-hsien and KMT legislator Hsieh Lung-jie today to jointly promote domestic oysters. With the Tainan mayoral election at the end of the year, the appearance of Chen Ting-fei and Hsieh Lung-jie, nominated by the DPP and KMT respectively, on the same stage to promote Tainan's fresh oysters also drew attention.

DPP legislator Lin Chun-hsien, together with the Tainan City District Fishermen's Association, held a promotional event for the Tainan oyster brand at the Legislative Yuan plaza today. DPP legislators Chen Ting-fei and Kuo Kuo-wen, as well as KMT legislator Hsieh Lung-jie, all attended, enjoying deep-fried fresh oysters and creamy baked oysters. Chen Ting-fei even cooked fresh oysters on the spot for Lin Chun-hsien and Hsieh Lung-jie to taste.

In his speech, Lin Chun-hsien pointed out that Taiwan has been farming oysters for over 300 years, but in recent years has faced severe competition from foreign imports. The import quantity of oysters increased from 1 metric ton in 2015, the year imports were opened, to 1,300 metric tons in 2021, and further grew to 3,900 metric tons by 2024.

To protect oyster farmers, Lin stated that in addition to government assistance in establishing a brand and conducting proper import quarantine and inspection, the concerted efforts of the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Ministry of Agriculture finally led to the approval of "demarcated fishery rights" for Tainan's Annan, Anping, and South districts, covering over 10,000 oyster farming racks. This allows them to receive government subsidies in the event of natural disasters.

Chen Ting-fei said that when imported oysters are mixed into the market, it affects public perception of oyster quality. Therefore, when purchasing, consumers should look for oysters with a production and sales history (traceability) to buy the large and fresh Tainan oysters.

Hsieh Lung-jie said that oyster farming in Tainan is very competitive, but with a good brand and quality, there is no fear of competition, because he believes that once you have tasted Tainan oysters, you will know that the imported ones you ate in the past were 'eaten for nothing.'

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Huang Chao-chin stated that Tainan oysters have three major advantages. First, they are fresh; not only is it the peak season now, but domestic oysters are fresher than those imported by ship. Second, they offer 100% nutrition; oysters are also known as 'milk of the sea' for their rich nutritional value, similar to milk. Third, they are 100% certified by the fishermen's association; product traceability can prove they are 100% Taiwanese-produced with no quality issues.

Regarding the issue of mixed-origin imported oysters, Fisheries Agency Director-General Wang Mao-cheng said that from 2023 to the present, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health and Welfare have inspected 119 cases of oysters, with 20 cases involving mixed-origin imports. Among these, 16 cases have been prosecuted by the District Prosecutors Office, with 2 convictions and 1 deferred prosecution. The government will continue to guard against mixed-origin imports and assist the industry. (Editor: Su Lung-chi) 1150515
