(Central News Agency, Miaoli County, 14th, Reporter Kuan Jui-ping) Thick smoke billowed from the National Energy Storage System Testing Center located in the Tongluo Science Park of the Hsinchu Science Park this afternoon. The Miaoli County Fire Bureau dispatched personnel and vehicles to the scene upon receiving the report. Preliminary understanding suggests that thermal runaway occurred during a lithium battery test, emitting a large amount of smoke. No one was injured or trapped at the scene.
The Miaoli County Fire Bureau received a report around 1:30 PM that a building on Tongke 8th Road in Tongluo Township was emitting thick smoke and immediately dispatched crews from Tongluo, Sanyi, and Gongguan fire stations.
Wu Chia-jung, a sub-squad leader of the Tongluo Fire Station, pointed out that the incident was suspected to be a thermal runaway during a lithium battery test, which produced a large amount of smoke. The only way to handle it is to move the lithium battery into a fire-water pool for cooling.
Wu said that no open flames were found upon arrival at the scene, and internal personnel had safely evacuated after the incident. No one was trapped or injured. Post-incident procedures, including segmenting and moving the battery to soak in water and assisting with smoke ventilation, are ongoing. The detailed cause of the incident is still under investigation.
The National Energy Storage System Testing Center was inaugurated in the Tongluo Science Park in December 2024. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection of the Ministry of Economic Affairs stated in a press release at the time that the center's opening made it the largest energy storage system safety testing laboratory in the country. It has completed the construction of fire prevention, combustion, vibration, and environmental testing laboratories, possessing the most comprehensive range of testing items and a safety testing capacity for 360 kW/360 kWh energy storage systems, making it a top-tier energy storage system safety testing laboratory globally.
