(Central News Agency, Taipei, 14th) As international crude oil prices have broken the $100 per barrel mark, Chinese domestic airlines will increase the fuel surcharge on mainland China routes starting from the 16th, with a maximum increase of 50%.

According to Xinhua News Agency, several Chinese airlines stated today that for passenger tickets on mainland China routes sold from May 16, the fuel surcharge will be increased. For routes of 800 kilometers or less, the charge per segment will be 90 RMB (approximately 396 NTD), a 50% increase. For routes over 800 kilometers, the charge per segment will be 170 RMB, a 41.67% increase. Infant passengers are exempt from the fuel surcharge, and children will be charged half.

China last increased the fuel surcharge for mainland routes on April 5, when the charge for segments of 800 kilometers or less was raised to 60 RMB, and for segments over 800 kilometers to 120 RMB, a five-fold increase at the time.

Starting May 16, with the fuel surcharge for mainland China routes plus the current 50 RMB airport construction fee, passengers purchasing tickets will need to pay an additional 140 to 220 RMB on top of the ticket price. (Editors: Yang Sheng-ju / Tian Rui-hua) 1150514
