(Central News Agency, Reporter Wang Chao-yu, Keelung, 14th) An 83-year-old man surnamed Chiu in Keelung City was sent to the hospital unconscious in February and died after 13 days of treatment. An investigation by prosecutors and police found that his grandson, also surnamed Chiu, had asked the elderly man for money and a dispute ensued. The elderly man was beaten to death. After questioning by the prosecutor, a court granted a request today to detain and hold the grandson incommunicado.

According to reports, the elderly Mr. Chiu was sent to the Keelung Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare for emergency treatment on February 14 after falling into a coma. After being transferred to the intensive care unit, he was declared dead around 1:00 AM on February 27. The hospital diagnosed the cause of death as traumatic subdural hemorrhage and respiratory failure.

Police intervened and found that the statements from Mr. Chiu's spouse and grandson, among four people, were inconsistent. Not only did the grandson fail to mention that he had beaten his grandfather during his statement, but the family also downplayed the dispute between the grandfather and grandson, showing signs of concealment.

Through continuous police investigation, it was learned that a family member witnessed the elderly Mr. Chiu arguing with his grandson in the living room on the first floor of their residence in Xinyi District, Keelung City, on February 12. He was beaten to the ground by his grandson, suffering a bleeding head injury, and subsequently showed signs of listlessness and lethargy.

Prosecutors and police suspect that the grandson became angry and beat his grandfather on the head and other parts of his body with his bare hands after his request for money was denied. After questioning by the prosecutor, it was determined that there was significant suspicion that the grandson had committed the crime of causing death by injury to a direct blood ascendant. A request was made to the Keelung District Court today to detain and hold him incommunicado.

The court held a detention hearing at 6:00 PM. After questioning by the judge, at 8:00 PM, it was determined that the grandson was highly suspected of the crime, which carries a minimum sentence of five years, and there was reason to believe he might flee or collude with accomplices or witnesses. The court ruled to detain him and hold him incommunicado. (Editor: Li Shu-hua) 1150514
