Wu Derong: Frontal System Affects Taiwan for 3 Consecutive Days, Beware of Instantaneous Heavy Rainfall from North to South
According to meteorologist Wu Derong, a frontal system will gradually move southward over Taiwan for three days starting today, bringing showers or thunderstorms and potential instantaneous heavy rainfall. From May 16-18, scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected, followed by stable and summer-like hot weather from May 19 onwards.

(Central News Agency Reporter Chang Hsiung-Feng, Taipei, May 13) Meteorologist Wu Derong stated that today, a frontal system is gradually moving southward, bringing showers or thunderstorms from north to south across various regions, with attention required for instantaneous heavy rainfall. From May 16 to 18, the weather will shift to afternoon thunderstorms; from May 19 onwards, the atmosphere will stabilize, with daytime temperatures feeling like summer.
Wu Derong, an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University, stated today in the Weather Applications Promotion Foundation's "Xie Tian Ji Classroom" column that the latest European model simulations show that the third wave of the plum rain front (May and June) will gradually move southward over the next two days (today and tomorrow). Northern, eastern, and central Taiwan will successively experience localized showers or thunderstorms, with temperatures gradually dropping, making northern Taiwan slightly cooler. On May 15, the frontal system will move further south, bringing localized showers or thunderstorms to all regions.
Wu Derong pointed out that from today until May 15, attention should be paid to the impact of convective cells accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and instantaneous heavy rainfall. From May 16 to 18, the frontal system will continue to move southward into the Bashi Channel and gradually weaken. The weather will be warm and hot, but the atmosphere will remain unstable, with localized afternoon showers or thunderstorms still possible.
Wu Derong mentioned that from May 19 to 22, the frontal system will move away, the atmosphere will gradually stabilize, and daytime temperatures will feel "hot like summer," with occasional localized short-term rainfall in mountainous areas in the afternoon. Since there are large discrepancies in the long-term simulations of various international models, and continuous adjustments are expected, continued observation is necessary.
