(Central News Agency reporter Tsai Chih-ming, Chiayi County, 13th) At around 6 PM yesterday, staff driving a work cart for the Alishan Forest Railway's fiber optic construction project collided with a work cart belonging to a hazardous tree removal contractor at the 38.8 km mark of the forest railway. The work carts were damaged, but fortunately no one was injured, and train operations were not affected. The Forest Railway Administration has reported the incident to the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) as per regulations.

The Alishan Forest Railway fiber optic project, which recently saw disputes between outsourced contractors and their subcontractors, experienced a work safety incident yesterday. It is suspected that there was insufficient communication with the hazardous tree removal contractor, leading to the collision of work carts in the Jiaoliping section.

The Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Management Office of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, issued a press release today stating that after the full line of the Alishan Forest Railway opened in July 2024, train frequencies increased. As the area along the line is limited, contractors had to shorten construction hours during the day to accommodate train operations, thus performing night work to facilitate project progress.

The Forest Railway Administration pointed out that preliminary investigations show both contractors had applied to Jiaoliping Station for night work on the route as per regulations. However, the reason for the collision will be promptly investigated in a safety working group meeting to thoroughly review the cause of the incident and related responsibilities for negligence, and to devise improved management measures to prevent similar occurrences.

The Forest Railway Administration stated that the accident caused damage to the logging contractor's work cart, but no personnel were injured, nor was the railway line damaged or train operations affected. The incident has been reported to the TTSB, the Railway Bureau, and the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency as per regulations. (Edited by Chang Ya-ching) 1150513
