Central News Agency, Taipei, 13th - The wave of generative AI has pushed up the demand for high-performance computing, making data center cooling and thermal management technologies a key focus of industry competition. According to the 'Patent Trend Analysis of Key Data Center Components' report released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Intellectual Property Office, Taiwanese manufacturers have shown strong capabilities in their global patent portfolios for cooling technology, with Inventec, Hon Hai Technology, and Quanta Computer all ranking among the top 20 patent applicants worldwide.

According to the report, the Intellectual Property Office statistics show a total of 8,449 global patent families between 2015 and 2024, indicating a compound annual growth rate of 17% for patents related to data center cooling and thermal management, driven by the demand for generative AI and high-performance computing.

The report points out that among the top 20 global patent applicants for data center cooling and thermal management, the United States accounts for 40%, mainland China for 30%, and the three Taiwanese firms together account for 15%, surpassing Japan's 10% and Europe's 5%.

The Intellectual Property Office noted that Taiwanese firms have distinct features and a clear division of labor in their cooling technology patent layouts. Among them, Inventec has the most outstanding portfolio in the liquid cooling field, with 87 of its 111 global patents related to liquid cooling, and holds 19 patents in the high-barrier immersion liquid cooling technology, the most among Taiwanese firms.

Hon Hai Technology has adopted a comprehensive technology layout. In addition to immersion liquid cooling, it also covers data center environmental thermal management technologies such as air conditioning systems and hot/cold aisle containment, forming a complete cooling solution.

Quanta Computer continues to deepen its expertise in air cooling technology, accumulating about 50 related patents. This reflects its solid foundation in the existing server market and during its technological transformation, making it one of the few major players in the global top 20 with more air cooling than liquid cooling patents.

The Intellectual Property Office stated that as the power consumption of AI servers continues to rise, cooling technology is accelerating its shift from air cooling to solutions like indirect liquid cooling and immersion liquid cooling. Leveraging their hardware manufacturing advantages and cross-border patent strategies, Taiwanese firms not only maintain competitiveness in mature technologies but also show growth momentum in the emerging liquid cooling sector, poised to play a key role in the global AI data center green supply chain in the future.
