PM Takaichi Coordinates Visits to UK and Italy Ahead of June G7 Summit

(Central News Agency, Tokyo, May 13, comprehensive foreign wire) Multiple Japanese government sources revealed today that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is coordinating visits to the United Kingdom and Italy before attending the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, to be held in France from June 15 to 17.

According to Kyodo News, Prime Minister Takaichi is expected to hold talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni separately to confirm cooperation in security and economic fields. They may also discuss cooperation for the early resolution of the Middle East situation.

Starmer and Meloni both visited Japan in January and invited Takaichi for return visits during their meetings. Such short-term reciprocal visits by heads of state demonstrate close bilateral relations.

However, due to the ruling Labour Party's crushing defeat in local elections, Starmer faces increasing pressure to resign domestically, posing variables for this planned visit to the UK.

Japan, the UK, and Italy are advancing the joint development of next-generation fighter jets. It is expected that the summit will reaffirm the policy of accelerating cooperation among defense industries. Furthermore, considering China's export controls on rare earths and other critical materials, Japan intends to reach an agreement on working together to strengthen the resilience of critical mineral supply chains.
