Iran urges US to accept peace proposal; Trump dismisses it as 'unacceptable'

(Central News Agency, Tehran, May 12, Comprehensive Foreign Report) As US President Trump warned that the Middle East ceasefire deal was on the verge of collapse, Iran's chief negotiator stated today that Washington must accept Tehran's latest peace plan, or face failure. Trump called this 'completely unacceptable.'

Agence France-Presse reported that the war, which erupted more than two months ago due to a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran, has spread throughout the Middle East and disrupted the global economy, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide, despite the ceasefire.

Both the US and Iran have refused to compromise and have repeatedly threatened to resume fighting, but neither seems willing to return to a state of full-scale war.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted on social media platform X: 'There is no alternative but to accept the rights of the Iranian people listed in the 14-point proposal. Any other approach will be completely fruitless; it will only be one failure after another.'

The longer they delay, the more American taxpayers will pay for it.

The Pentagon announced today that the cost of the war has climbed to nearly $29 billion, about $4 billion higher than the estimate provided two weeks ago.

Iran's latest proposal is a response to a previous US plan. Although details are limited, media reports indicate that the US plan includes a one-page memorandum aimed at ending the fighting and establishing a framework for negotiating Iran's nuclear program.

Iran's foreign ministry stated that Tehran's response calls for an end to the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, and the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad due to long-term sanctions.

However, Trump slammed Tehran's response as 'completely unacceptable,' stating that the US will achieve 'total victory' over Iran, and indicated that the ceasefire agreement, which has paused fighting for more than a month, is now precarious.

Trump later stated before departing for a visit to China today that he would have 'long talks' with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the Iran issue, but that he did not need Beijing's help to end the war. (Compiled by Li Pei-shan) 1150513
