(Central News Agency Reporter Tsai Meng-yu, Kaohsiung, May 13) Democratic Progressive Party Kaohsiung City Councilor Chen Hui-wen today questioned that Fengshan Railway Station has over 10,000 daily entries and exits, but the surrounding transfer route is unfriendly to pedestrians. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai said that he will convene relevant departments to coordinate with landowners and apply to the central government for funds to improve pedestrian pathways.

Kaohsiung City Council held a general interpellation today. Chen Hui-wen pointed out that Fengshan Railway Station is an important transportation hub with up to 11,000 daily entries and exits. However, currently, if people want to transfer to Kaohsiung MRT O12 Fengshan Station, they have to detour to Caogong Road and weave through traffic, making the route dangerous and inconvenient.

Chen Hui-wen stated that after on-site inspection, it was found that there is a piece of land next to Fengshan Railway Station that is fenced off. If it can be successfully opened up, people can directly connect to the scenic Caogong Canal waterfront pathway after exiting the station, and safely walk all the way to the MRT station and the old city area of Zhonghua Street. She also called on the city government to quickly propose a pathway improvement plan and apply to the central government for funds.

Chen Chi-mai pointed out that he will instruct the deputy mayor to convene relevant departments to coordinate with landowners and quickly resolve the fence obstruction. At the same time, he also instructed the city's Water Resources Bureau to apply to the central government for a maximum of NT$10 million in funds for pathway improvement, hoping that the funds will be in place as soon as possible to create a safer and more comfortable walking environment for Fengshan citizens.

In addition, Chen Hui-wen expressed concern about the removal of old asbestos tiles, stating that the city government's budget for asbestos tile removal is insufficient, and the current policy "only subsidizes removal but not demolition." Citizens are worried that replacing roofs will be deemed "new illegal construction," leading to disadvantaged families preferring to live in dangerous environments rather than demolishing them.

The city's Environmental Protection Bureau responded that it is currently formulating relevant guidelines with the Public Works Bureau's Building Management Office. Chen Chi-mai also promised to instruct the Secretary-General to coordinate relevant departments and review this year's budget surplus to find ways to accelerate assistance to citizens in dealing with asbestos tile issues.
