(Central News Agency reporter Zhang Qian, Hong Kong, 13th) Scholars from multiple Chinese universities have recently been successively reported for academic paper fabrication, an incident that has attracted widespread attention.

According to today's reports from Hong Kong's Ming Pao and information from mainland Weibo, the accuser is a well-known mainland social media blogger 'Geng Tongxue', whose real name is Geng Hongwei. He was a doctoral student at the School of Biomedical Engineering, Beihang University; in 2025, he chose to drop out and became a full-time anti-fraud blogger, now with over 1.8 million followers.

In the past month, 'Geng Tongxue' has successively reported scholars from several universities for fabricating papers published in international journals. The latest target of his accusation is Su Jiancan, Dean of the School of Translational Medicine at Shanghai University.

According to reports, 'Geng Tongxue' accused Su Jiancan of fabricating data in a paper published in a sub-journal of 'Nature'. The Secretariat of the Academic Committee of Shanghai University has issued a notice regarding this, stating that the university has established an investigation team and initiated investigation procedures. The university emphasized its consistent 'zero tolerance' policy towards academic misconduct and will handle the matter seriously and earnestly based on the investigation results.

The report states that judging from Shanghai University's swift response, 'Dean Su appears to be in serious trouble.'

Weibo messages indicate that this is the fifth time 'Geng Tongxue' has taken action against fraud in over a month.

On April 9, 'Geng Tongxue' accused Wang Ping's team, Dean of the School of Life Sciences and Technology at Tongji University, of fabricating a paper published in 'Nature'. Tongji University has confirmed that Wang Ping failed to oversee and manage experimental data and paper quality, and has removed him from his position and demoted him. Paper author Jin Jiali was dismissed.

On April 25, 'Geng Tongxue' questioned abnormal data in a paper by the Dean of the School of Life Sciences at Nankai University published in 'Nature Cancer'. Nankai University issued a statement on May 1, stating that it had initiated an investigation.

On May 4, 'Geng Tongxue' used his real name to accuse Kang Tiebang, a national outstanding young scholar from Sun Yat-sen University, of fabricating a paper in a sub-journal of 'Nature'. The university has also initiated investigation procedures.

Ming Pao's report states that 'Geng Tongxue's' anti-fraud actions target top young scholars and top journals in China's academic circle. The five accused individuals are prominent figures in biochemistry and medicine from well-known universities. Behind these academic irregularities is a research evaluation system that quantifies research output.

The report states: "Under the pressure of 'publishing papers is paramount,' some scholars do not hesitate to plagiarize, piece together, and fabricate to cope, and universities often turn a blind eye."

According to reports, 'Geng Tongxue's' anti-fraud model can be described as 'technological dimensionality reduction attack,' employing data analysis, statistical models, and automated detection tools, leaving no room for fraud.

'Geng Tongxue's' recent anti-fraud actions have sparked heated discussions among Chinese netizens. Some Weibo users commented: "I really want to know what happened to those deans, outstanding young scholars,长江学者 (Yangtze River scholars), and candidates for academicians he reported recently. If they are just let off lightly, it means that collective fraud and defrauding national funds can still continue. If not, then heads will really roll."

Another netizen commented: "A bunch of professors are trembling! Geng Tongxue fills the gap where no one dares to fight and outsiders don't know how to fight." (Editor: Lu Jia-rong) 1150513
