22 passengers quarantined in UK from hantavirus outbreak cruise ship now allowed to return home for isolation

(Central News Agency, London, 12th, comprehensive foreign report) The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced today that 22 passengers evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which experienced a hantavirus outbreak, and quarantined in northwest England, will be allowed to return home for isolation tomorrow. This group includes 20 British nationals, one German national with UK residency, and one Japanese national.

Agence France-Presse reported that there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for the rare hantavirus. After the outbreak on the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius, three passengers died, and one French female passenger remains in serious condition. Subsequently, the cruise ship docked in Tenerife, Spain, for passenger evacuation.

UKHSA issued a statement tonight, stating that these 22 passengers, who flew from Tenerife to the UK and have been quarantined since the 10th at a facility near Liverpool, "will soon be able to return home."

The UKHSA added that the health status of these individuals has been individually assessed by public health and clinical experts, and tailored support packages will be provided to enable them to undergo home isolation safely and practicably.

UKHSA stated: "After they leave the (quarantine) facility, health protection teams across the UK will continue to track and support each of them, maintaining daily contact during their (home) isolation to ensure they can isolate safely."
