Taxi Fuel Subsidy Up to NT$6,000, Registration Opens May 13

TAIPEI (CNA) — Amid rising oil prices due to the Middle East conflict, Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation is implementing a fuel subsidy program to ease the operational burden on taxi drivers. The program offers a NT$5 per liter discount, with a maximum subsidy of NT$6,000 per vehicle. The Directorate General of Highways announced today that registration will open a week early, starting May 13.

The Ministry of Transportation previously announced the launch of a taxi fuel discount subsidy program, adopting a direct subsidy model. It provides a NT$5 per liter discount, with a total subsidy of up to NT$6,000 per vehicle. The beneficiaries are all legally registered taxis nationwide (excluding pure electric vehicles), with an estimated 90,000 vehicles expected to benefit.

The Directorate General of Highways explained in a press release today that the taxi fuel subsidy will be implemented starting May 20. To manage the initial rush of registrations and applications, CPC and Formosa Plastics have been asked to open two channels for "existing discount card registration" and "new discount card application" starting May 13. Drivers can complete the procedures in advance and enjoy the discount when refueling with their registered discount card from May 20.

The Directorate General of Highways noted that the application period for this subsidy measure is until August 31, 2026, and the usage period is until December 31, 2026. Taxi drivers are reminded to complete registration before the deadline and ensure that the refueling vehicle number matches the registered vehicle number on the discount card to enjoy the subsidy.

The Directorate General of Highways further explained that there are two types of registration procedures. For those who do not yet hold a discount card, they can apply for one in person at designated CPC and Formosa Plastics gas stations (141 CPC stations; 563 Formosa Plastics stations). CPC also provides an additional online application channel for new discount cards.

For those who already hold a discount card, the Directorate General of Highways stated that drivers should choose one discount card to register to enjoy the subsidy. Registration can be done in person at designated CPC and Formosa Plastics gas stations. CPC also offers two methods: the 1912 customer service hotline and online registration.
