(Central News Agency reporter Gu Yong-li, Stockholm, 13th) President Lai Ching-te delivered a video address at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in Denmark on the 12th, stating that Taiwan's democracy can make a significant contribution to regional peace and stability and by providing democratic supply chains in the semiconductor and AI industries. Michael Danielsen, Chairman of Taiwan Corner, a Danish pro-Taiwan group, stated that President Lai's speech made Europe aware of Taiwan's ability to contribute to global democracy and also highlighted China's substantial threat to Taiwan.
President Lai was invited by the Alliance of Democracies (AoD) in Denmark to deliver a pre-recorded speech at the 9th Copenhagen Democracy Summit.
This year's Copenhagen Democracy Summit focused on the threats faced by Greenland, Taiwan, and Ukraine. Chairman Anders Fogh Rasmussen stated at the conference that the significance of the Democracy Summit lies in defending these democracies threatened by authoritarianism, and Taiwan is one of them.
He stated that Taiwan is a thriving democracy and plays a key role in the global technology industry. Taiwan demonstrates that the power of democracy and freedom can create an innovative, prosperous, and vibrant society, which is why China targets Taiwan. Because of Taiwan's freedom, those who support democratic values must support Taiwan.
President Lai's speech mentioned that last month, he had originally planned to lead a delegation to visit Eswatini but encountered China's obstruction of normal flight routes. This made it clearer to the global democratic community that authoritarian regimes are attempting to impose their rules on the world, even breaking international norms and using global flight safety and civil aviation order as leverage for political pressure.
He said that Taiwan is located at a critical position in the first island chain, at the forefront of the democratic defense line, and Taiwan is willing to share its experience in dealing with authoritarian forces with the international community. He also stated that Taiwan's world-leading semiconductor and AI industries are the result of long-term mutual trust and cooperation between Taiwan and the United States, Japan, Europe, and many democratic partners. In the future, Taiwan will continue to leverage its technological advantages to build trustworthy and more resilient democratic supply chains with democratic partners, making greater contributions to global economic security and prosperity.
President Lai also reiterated in his speech that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country, and the people of Taiwan have the right to go out into the world and the ability to contribute to the world. Any obstructive actions attempting to isolate Taiwan cannot change Taiwan's determination to participate in the international community. Taiwan will continue to be a force for good in the international community, shining brightly in the world.
Michael Danielsen, Chairman of Taiwan Corner, a Danish pro-Taiwan organization that has long followed Taiwan, told the Central News Agency after President Lai's speech that President Lai's speech was excellent, especially his mention that Taiwan can contribute to the world's economy and democratic supply chains.
Danielsen stated that it is important that Taiwan no longer considers itself a "small country" and that this should be stated loudly and repeatedly. He said that Taiwan is one of the top 20 economies in the world, making it a major country that can contribute much to the world, and President Lai's speech conveyed this important message.
Furthermore, he believes that President Lai's speech also clearly conveyed China's threat to the Danish attendees through the example of his recent obstructed overseas visit.
The Copenhagen Democracy Summit has long focused on Taiwan's democracy, inviting high-level Taiwanese speakers annually. This year marks President Lai's second invitation to speak at the summit. Former President Tsai Ing-wen was invited to attend and speak in person in 2025. (Edited by Chen Cheng-kung) 1150513
