(Central News Agency reporter Li Chin-wei, New Delhi, 12th) Indian film star Joseph Vijay, after being elected as a Tamil Nadu legislator and subsequently becoming Chief Minister, announced today that 717 government-operated liquor stores within a 500-meter radius of schools, religious sites, and bus stops will be closed within two weeks.

The Times of India reported that Vijay called for a comprehensive investigation in Tamil Nadu to ascertain the number of liquor stores operated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation near schools, temples, and bus terminals.

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation, headquartered in Chennai, is a government-operated enterprise responsible for the wholesale and retail of alcoholic beverages across Tamil Nadu, with a total of 4,765 retail outlets statewide.

Hindustan Times reported that an investigation revealed 276 of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation's liquor stores were located near religious sites, 186 near educational institutions, and 255 near bus stops. Consequently, Vijay ordered all 717 of these stores to be closed within two weeks.

A Tamil Nadu official stated that Vijay's action aims to impose stricter regulation on liquor sales points and alleviate public concerns about the close proximity of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation liquor stores to sensitive locations.

The report also noted that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (Tamil Nadu Victory Party) achieved one of the biggest miracles in modern Indian politics in the recent Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Most of the party's candidates were political newcomers, yet they secured 108 out of 234 seats, falling just 10 seats short of becoming the majority party.

Indian elections are typically influenced by religion, caste systems, and welfare policies in manifestos. However, Vijay, being a film star born in Chennai, is naturally the most well-known figure among the people of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, despite having limited time for active campaigning, his immense online popularity ultimately led to his election as a legislator and subsequently, his swearing-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on the 10th.

Upon assuming office, Vijay has introduced several welfare policies, one of which offers 200 units of free electricity for households consuming up to 500 units per month. (Editor: Chang Chih-hsuan) 1150512
