(Central News Agency reporter Guan Ruiping, Miaoli County, 12th) Heavy rains in early April caused disasters in Miaoli County. Today, personnel from the county government's Agriculture Department were inspecting the damage to Miaoli Line 14 road in Zaoqiao Township when their vehicle accidentally fell into a valley. The four people in the vehicle were rescued by the fire department and sent to the hospital. Fortunately, all were conscious and not in life-threatening condition.

Miaoli County Fire Department stated that at around 11:40 AM, they received a report that a car had fallen into a valley on the Erliukeng section of Miaoli Line 14. Zaoqiao, Touwu, Sanwan, and Toufen brigades immediately dispatched a total of 5 vehicles and 16 personnel to the scene. The vehicle had fallen about 4 meters into a river valley. A total of 4 injured people (2 men and 2 women) were lifted ashore by a crane. Two had minor injuries, and two had suspected dislocated hands. All were sent to Dachien General Hospital for treatment.

Zaoqiao Township Mayor Xu Lianbin, who witnessed the incident, said that Miaoli Line 14 was damaged by heavy rains in early April, causing road surface and slope collapses. The township office reported the damage for post-disaster repair. Today, they were conducting a disaster survey and re-inspection with the county government's Agriculture Department and the Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture. The group traveled in three vehicles.

Xu Lianbin said that Miaoli Line 14 is only about 3 meters wide and has many curves. On the way back, the vehicle of the consulting company, which was leading the convoy, may have been unfamiliar with the road conditions and the narrow road width. "It just went down all of a sudden," he said. Those behind saw it happen and immediately reported it to the fire department for rescue.

Among the four injured, two were from the consulting company, and the other two were employees of the Miaoli County Government Agriculture Department's Leisure Agriculture Section. All were conscious when sent to the hospital. Chen Shuyi, Director of the County Government Agriculture Department, rushed to the hospital after hearing the news.

Miaoli County Police Bureau Zhunan Precinct stated in a press release that preliminary investigations showed that a 21-year-old woman surnamed Lin was driving on the accident section when her vehicle accidentally veered into a ditch on the left. Ms. Lin, possibly startled, suddenly turned the steering wheel sharply to the right, causing the entire vehicle to lose control and fall into the valley.

Police said that Ms. Lin's alcohol test result was 0. The detailed cause and circumstances of the accident are still under further investigation. (Editor: Li Xizhang) 1150512
