(Central News Agency reporter Yu Xiaowen, Taipei, 12th) The Maritime and Port Bureau stated that it has for the first time issued an advanced training certificate under the "International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code)", symbolizing a further step forward in Taiwan's dual-fuel ship seafarer training system.

In response to the international trend of carbon reduction, three national shipping companies have purchased over 90 dual-fuel ships. To cultivate domestic talent for dual-fuel vessels, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Maritime and Port Bureau has actively promoted relevant training and has now issued the first advanced training certificate for the IGF Code.

The Maritime and Port Bureau announced today in a press release that Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, in response to the operational needs of its LNG dual-fuel ships, dispatched its seafarers to receive IGF Code advanced training at National Taiwan Ocean University starting from April 2025. They completed two simulated bunkering trainings and obtained two certification documents: "one onboard bunkering experience" and "one month of sea service on a dual-fuel ship".

The Maritime and Port Bureau pointed out that after reviewing compliance with regulations, the first IGF Code advanced training certificate was issued recently, indicating that the IGF advanced training certification system has officially commenced. These are also the first batch of seafarers in Taiwan to obtain IGF advanced training qualification.

The Maritime and Port Bureau stated that the IGF Code advanced training content covers professional courses such as low-flashpoint fuel characteristics, fuel system operation, risk identification, emergency response, and practical drills, which are important capabilities for seafarers entering dual-fuel ship service.

The Maritime and Port Bureau said that in addition to completing the issuance of domestic IGF Code advanced training certificates, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation also successfully obtained IGF advanced training certificates issued by Belgium through National Taiwan Ocean University. In the future, they will continue to assist in improving training capacity and perfecting the certification system. (Editor: Li Hengshan) 1150512
